Sunday Times House of the Week – Artisan chic in hipster Portobello

An architect has transformed No 28 Martin Street from traditional cottage to urban base, writes Cara O’Doherty

If you stand at the front door of No 28 Martin Street in Dublin 8’s chic Portobello and look left, you see the tree-lined Grand Canal. While on busy mornings and evenings the view will be impeded by throngs of cyclists and walkers making their way to work, at quieter times, the view will be all yours. Across the narrow road, there is a matching row of Victorian artisan dwellings, however No 28 differs slightly with its coat of orange paint. The two-bedroom, 80 sq m house was bought by its current owners in 2014 for €380,000. Back then, the paint colour was more of a wine, the windows were aluminium and the interiors were your traditional two-up, two-down. Under the supervision of an architect who happened to be a relative, they undertook some extensive renovations.
